Telegothic Rex In Progress

Here's the "Telegothic Rex" in progress. The paint is flat black enamel (4 coats, including Kilz primer, sanding in between each coat). I used my router to cut out a 1/4" recess in the areas painted red. The red paint is hand-applied and is standard acrylic artist paint. The white bits (or bones, as I refer to them) in this picture are just cutouts to get an approximate size and distribution. These pics don't show the bones in the small red section yet, but they will be smaller, of course.

The next step is to outline the bones and paint them in by hand, again with acrylic paint. The big debate on this one so far has been whether to stick with the original chrome hardware or try to replace it all with black. Since I can't find matte (flat) black hardware to replace it, I'm thinking I'll probably just stick with chrome. Besides, I think it represents a nice contrast to the rest of it.

I will also be spraying the front of the headstock to match the body. No bones or red on it, just the paint.

The painting of the bones is now complete, as well as several coats of paint on the headstock. I debated as to whether to paint the headstock at all, but I think it will look great. All that's left is two small spots to touch up with flat black and to shoot it with satin poly to seal it up. I'll probably do two coats even though ideally I would only do one. Even though the poly is satin, it's still not going to be as flat as the black paint.
