Crafted from reclaimed padauk, these coasters began as part of a furniture panel assembled by a commercial manufacturer. When the panel failed to meet production standards, it was set aside. Rather than letting the material go to waste, the wood was recovered and reworked by hand into functional, lasting objects.

Padauk is a tropical hardwood that comes primarily from Africa and Southeast Asia, depending on the species. Since this was recycled, we cannot be sure of the original source. Padauk wood is naturally brilliant orange to red when freshly cut, darkening over time to a deep reddish-brown. Very straight, often grass-grained, though it can show ribboning and it is naturally rot- and insect-resistant with a distinctive spicy, peppery scent when worked.
