These two read oak blocks are offcuts of my desk project. The faces as you see them were connected at the junction (crotch) of two trunks of the tree (see slab cut diagram below). As with all trees, the wood and bark continue to grow throughout its life, but because the trunks were so close, there was no space to grow into, so it compacted and compressed into incredible swirls and folds much like a burl. I decided to set them aside for a future project.
Several years later I began to clean and shape the pieces so that they would be approximately the same size and stand side by side. It was a very time-consuming process because I didn't want to damage any of the elements that indicate these two parts were previously one whole.
There were several attempts to finish the peice but each time I was unsatisfied with the sheen and the way the wood felt. I finally settled on two coats of satin spray polyurethane over two coats of gloss. (The pictures you see for this project were taken before the satin finish was applied.)
